Malaysia's newest airport, the KLIA2, has been dubbed Malaysia's next generation hub that allows seamless connectivity for both local and international budget and hybrid carriers.
KLIA2 was envisioned to cater to the explosive growth in low-cost travel. Designed to accommodate up to 45 million passengers a year and replacing the previous Low Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT), the infrastructure is the first airport in Asia and the third in the world with a skybridge spanning 300 m that connects the passenger terminal to the satellite building.
KLIA2 also boasts the world’s tallest air traffic control tower, standing at almost 134 m above land and 142 m above sea level. The new KLIA2 terminal is measured to be at least 257,000 sqm, with 60 gates, 8 remote stands, 80 aerobridges, plus a retail space of 32,000 sqm to accommodate 225 retail outlets.
At the stroke of midnight on 2 May 2014, Malaysia welcomed the first flight - a Malindo Air flight flying in from Kota Kinabalu - arrive at the new KLIA2 terminal.
Malindo Air has moved their operations previously at KLIA to the their new home, the new KLIA2 terminal, which takes effect from 2 May 2014. As jet flights will land and depart from KLIA2, passengers are advised to make necessary transport arrangements to avoid complications. Apart from the jet flights, all Malindo Air flights departing from Subang Airport (SZB) are not affected.
The new terminal is easily accessible via multiple public transportation. Passengers may opt to take a 33-minute or 39-minute high-speed electric train ride using KLIA Express or KLIA Transit from KL Sentral. Another fast mode of transportation is by taxi, which runs by meter and should take only 45-50 minutes to reach KLIA2. Alternatively, there are plenty of comfortable buses within peninsular Malaysia that directly connect passengers to the terminal.
